Artist and full-time professor Jay Wilson says he uses “humble materials” like toothpicks and matches to create these beautiful works. I love how he incorporates typography and how you can see the red tips of the matches in the deers’ antlers or in the lettering. In addition to toothpicks and safety matches, he uses just glue and T-pins.
It has been about three months since I’ve logged into my tumblr account. Far too long I realized as I smiled upon my long-due login at the lovely and familiar array on my dashboard. It seems that my deer tracks have lead me astray…all the way to ANTARCTICA.
Six months ago I POSTED THIS (click)and with some hard work and luck I actually made it happen. I took nearly that same photo from the window of a C-17 military plane as I flew over the frozen continent of Antarctica, anxiously anticipating the touchdown on the ice runway. I will be here in Antarctica for a total of 5 months, working, living and growing my antlers so to speak. It’s a crazy opportunity that very few people are able to have. For that I am thankful, grateful and humbled.
It’s a harsh continent here and it’s tough for a ladydeer to survive at times. It’s so far from my natural habitat. There are not trees for me to hide behind, no forest for me to wander and contemplate life. Here it is magnificent and bold, terrifying and unforgiving. And that’s just the continent - I actually find myself to be my own worst enemy: questioning my natural deer-like instincts and tendencies. ”You shy you die,” they say. I guess I’m working on not being so easily spooked off.

I want to write a book about how people interact, relate, communicate….a book about personalities colliding. A book of everyday occurences. Life as we know it, quite literally. It might be boring to some, but fascinating to others…I would hope.
32 Flavors by Ani DiFranco. Hadn’t heard it in awhile - forgot how amazing the lyrics are, which you can read below if you so please.
squint your eyes and look closer I’m not between you and your ambition I am a poster girl with no poster I am thirty-two flavors and then some and I’m beyond your peripheral vision so you might want to turn your head cause someday you’re going to get hungry and eat most of the words you just said
both my parents taught me about good will and I have done well by their names just the kindness I’ve lavished on strangers is more than I can explain still there’s many who’ve turned out their porch lights just so I would think they were not home and hid in the dark of their windows til I’d passed and left them alone
and god help you if you are an ugly girl course too pretty is also your doom cause everyone harbors a secret hatred for the prettiest girl in the room and god help you if you are a phoenix and you dare to rise up from the ash a thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy while you are just flying back
I’m not trying to give my life meaning by demeaning you and I would like to state for the record I did everything that I could do I’m not saying that I’m a saint I just don’t want to live that way no, I will never be a saint but I will always say
squint your eyes and look closer I’m not between you and your ambition I am a poster girl with no poster I am thirty-two flavors and then some And I’m beyond your peripheral vision So you might want to turn your head Cause someday you might find you’re starving and eating all of the words you said
